And so Mrs. Branican decided to go to Adelaide by sea. This was a four days’ voyage, and, adding forty-eight hours for the stoppage the boats make at Melbourne, she would reach the capital of South Australia after a six days journey along the coast. It is true that it was now August, which corresponds to February in the northern hemisphere. But the weather was calm and the wind in the northwest, so that the steamer would be under the shelter of the coast as soon as she was through Bass’s Straits. And besides, as she had come from San Francisco to Sydney, Mrs. Branican had nothing to be uneasy about in a trip from Sydney to Adelaide.
